The Gönc family has been farming vines near Ptuj since 1936 — Peter's great-grandfather planted the first vines and built the cellar that still anchors the estate today. Ptuj is one of the oldest towns in Slovenia, and Štajerska, the region surrounding it, has a long history of growing grapes shaped by continental weather: warm days, cool nights, and the kind of slow-build ripeness that keeps wines taut.
Peter is the fourth generation. He's taken on the estate with an eye toward what came before him and a clear sense of what he wants to do differently. That balance — continuity and genuine curiosity — shows up in how he farms and how he makes wine.
The name Gönc itself comes from a traditional 136-liter barrel historically used in the region. It's a small detail, but it's the kind of thing Peter cares about: local, specific, connected to place.
Farming and Winemaking
Peter farms using organic practices and brings the same deliberate approach into the cellar — attentive to early handling, gentle pressing, and giving fermentations time rather than forcing them. The goal is wines that reflect where they came from in a given year, not a house style ironed flat across vintages. Štajerska produces wines with clean aromatics and natural acidity. The climate does a lot of the work. Peter's job, as he sees it, is not to get in the way.
The Vineyard
The estate sits in the rolling hills of the Štajerska region within the broader Podravje wine area. The terrain is varied — different slopes, different exposures — and the continental climate means the fruit builds character over a long growing season without losing the lift that makes these wines interesting.
Cuvée Anna comes from this estate, blending three varieties with deep local roots. Žametna Črnina — the oldest living vine in the world at an estimated 375 to 400 years old, native to Slovenia — is the backbone of the blend. Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir round it out.
